Nonsurgical removal of a knotted pulmonary artery catheter.
Though controversy exists regarding the utility of pulmonary artery catheters (PAC), their use persists in select patients. Knotting of these catheters upon insertion is a rare but serious complication. We present 2 cases of coagulopathic patients undergoing orthotopic liver transplantation complicated by PAC knotting on attempted line placement. Both knotted PAC were successfully removed nonsu...

We describe the case of a 52-year-old man with end-stage emphysema who underwent a right-sided lung transplantation. During preoperative monitoring an apparently non-functioning Swan-Ganz catheter could not be removed through the insertion site - right internal jugular vein. Another Swan-Ganz catheter was successfully installed through the left internal jugular vein, pulmonary artery pressures ...

An intravascular bullet was retrieved percutaneously in a 17-year-old boy with the use of a modified 24-F Amplatz dilator. The dilator was modified by means of a longitudinal incision with removal of a wedge at the distal tip of the tapered portion of the dilator. The bullet, which was located in the left pulmonary artery, was removed via the right femoral vein. No complications occurred.

INTRODUCTION Totally implantable venous access systems (TIVAS), Swan-Ganz (SG) and central venous catheters (CVC) allow easy and repetitive entry to the central cardiovascular system. Fragments of them may be released inadvertently into the cardiovascular system during their insertion or as a result of mechanical complications encountered during long-term utilization. AIM To present results o...

Dear Editor, We read with interest the recent article of Yavas on the tracheostomy in the intensive care unit.1 The authors treated 205 patients needing tracheostomy, 65.4% with surgical tracheostomy (ST) and 34.6% with percutaneous tracheostomy (PT). The authors, while performing PT, used two procedures: the Ciaglia percutaneous dilatational tracheostomy technique using multiple dilators and t...
